unique, beautiful and making a difference.
(just like our customers)
Kantha Bae has partnered with Basha Boutique to bring you fabrics hand-embroidered, supporting fair-trade. Basha means "house of hope," and there, Bangladeshi women coming from at risk and trafficking environments find a home, a job, and safe care for their children. Kantha Bae also designs head wraps, ring slings, and swaddles for infants and toddlers.
Kantha is a type of embroidery, especially popular in India. Women in Bengal typically use old saris and cloth and layer them with kantha stitch to make a light blanket, throw or bedspread, especially for children. We source our Kantha directly from India and Bangladesh and then use our own designs to create products with the fabric.
Each piece is one-of-a-kind when it comes to the patterns and prints you'll find in our shop, however the Kantha we use is 100% woven cotton. This means the type of fabric is the same for each design. We are compliant with all current CPSIA standards and regulations as your baby's safety and comfort are our primary concerns. We love the softness and bohemian flare that Kantha brings to every design that we put out and we think you will, too!
In the Bengali language basha means ‘house’ and asha means ‘hope’. Basha is the house of hope we're helping build in Bangladesh.
Basha Enterprises Ltd, a social business based in Bangladesh, creates a distinctive range of home textiles, jewellery and accessories. Basha textile products feature a traditional Bengali technique known as Kantha, the straight, even stitching together of layers of saris. Women gain job skills and the opportunity to develop into leaders and entrepreneurs in a healthy, healing, supportive environment. Basha opened its doors on 1 May 2011. That day fourteen women joined Basha’s Dhaka office ready to begin a new life. Four years later Basha had grown to include three production sites, employing more than triple the original number of women. An additional training center will begin producing in October 2015. Today, driven by the needs of the many thousands of women in Bangladesh who are forced into lives they are deeply ashamed of, Basha passionately continues to create alternative opportunities one job at a time – through sales of our life-giving, one-of-a-kind products.
Basha’s vision is to continue to grow as long as there are women in Bangladesh in need of dignified work.
