Meet Khadi - a luxe boho dream line of neutral closet staples

These dreamy designs were created to be luxe boho staple pieces that pair like soul mates with your fave Kantha pieces and we hope this blog helps you get to know them more + the beautiful story behind this gorgeous new line!

What is Khadi?

You’re probably wondering, much like we did, what exactly is Khadi? To explain it simply think a beautiful sister of the fabric we all know and love, linen. However, the 2 fabrics are defined differently by the technique, fabric content and country of origination. India is Khadi’s birthplace, it is a hand spun piece usually made of cotton while linen is a cloth woven from flax and can be found produced in countries worldwide.

The story behind Khadi, from our partners in India:

Years ago in India when money was few and everything was made by hand, it was difficult for families to secure enough money to purchase fabrics to create their clothing with. During this time however there was an item they had plenty of through their agricultural efforts...  cotton! Cotton proved to be a huge blessing for all as families could start weaving their own beautiful fabric to adorn their bodies with. Thankfully since they could not afford new clothing for every season this beautiful cotton fabric also proved to be both durable and versatile... standing the test of time, the cold and the heat. Khadi, the beautiful sister to the fabric we all know and love, linen, is hand-loomed from cotton grown in local villages and then sewn together to become the magical garments you see!

What impact are these designs making on India today?

As always here at Kantha Bae are main focus is to see people, so of course the heart behind this line continues to embody the heart of our shop.

This new Khadi line is not only providing more work and new jobs to the villages we partner with in the sense of the talented sewers but in other ways as well.

This line is providing work for those who are skilled in the trades of hand looming fabrics, producing cotton and hand dying fabrics.

When you snag pieces from this new line you are continuing in the Kantha Bae story to make a tangible difference in those lives in India as these pieces provide work for more talented sewers amongst artisans of other trades, who without this opportunity might not have the chance to earn a fair wage through their talents.

As always thank you for loving on our shop big and for helping us truly see people both stateside and worldwide!

How do I care for my Khadi?

The question we all want to know when experiencing a new fabric in our clothing. These have been pre-shrunk to assist in avoiding any washing mishaps and they get softer and softer with every wear + wash. Like with the pieces you already know and love from KB we always recommend hand wash + hang dry to get the most life out of your pieces. However, in a pinch we have also had success in washing on a cold, gentle cycle in a delicates bag and then hung to dry. Fluff lightly in the dryer on low heat if a refresh or fluff is needed.

Please keep in mind as with all naturally dyed and light colored pieces color bleeding is possible! Therefore we always recommend to wash with cold water only and as a tip try a vinegar soak and/or color catching sheets are always helpful in protecting the color of your garments!

Bottom line: Khadi is the new linen, it’s our newest closet staple and we are obsessed! We hope you love these beautiful new offerings as much as we do friends!

With open Hands,

KB Fam
